The black mission fig (ficus carica black mission) has a colorful tale of discovering the fig trees in a Mission garden in California about 100 years ago. The origin of the black mission fig can also be traced to the Balearic Islands. The fruits are elongated with an over all black-purple color which dries to black. Fruit is often found on the shelves of the grocery store dried fruit section, and is easily dried at home. Fresh fruit flesh is watermelon pink with a good flavor. Black mission has a prolific breba crop which appears prior to leaves in the spring, on the prior season's growth, and may need cover to protect fruit under clear skies when the air temperature is below 40 drgrees fahrenheit. This may seem to be extra effort, but the results of preserving this early crop of figs make the protection worthwhile. We provide well developed plants which may be purchased bare root, or in 1 gallon containers. These are fast growing trees that are capable of producing some figs this year. These trees develop fruit parthenocarpically (without pollination) so more than one plant is not needed. However, if you are not familiar with growing figs it may be a good idea to purchase more than one plant to provide a comparison.
