BRUNSWICK FIG

The brunswick fig (ficus carica brunswick) also known as magnolia is the most popular commercial canning fig in the South. It has a medium to large fig with a large eye that may contribute to water absorption during wet weather resulting in some loss of flavor. Otherwise, it is a strong growing fig tree with large green immature fruit having an enlarged base (stem) that turns tan with a rose tinge as it ripens. The fig leaf is distinctive with long narrow lobes. Fresh fruit flesh is amber in color with a good flavor. Brunswick has a prolific breba crop which appears prior to leaves in the spring, on the prior season's growth, and may need cover to protect fruit under clear skies when the air temperatre is below 40 drgrees fahrenheit. This may seem to be extra effort, but the results of preserving this early crop of figs make the protection worthwhile. We provide well developed plants which may be purchased bare root, or in 3 gallon containers. These are fast growing trees that are capable of producing some figs this year. These trees develop fruit parthenocarpically (without pollination) so more than one plant is not needed for pollination. However, if you are not familiar with growing figs it may be a good idea to purchase more than one plant to provide a comparison.
